Consider Spice as Medicine

Consider Spice as a Medicine
When we talk about spicy food we are usually referring to chilli and other seasonings and condiments such as turmeric, cumin seed, mustards, hot tomato sauce, salsa, chilli pickle, etc. Spicy food is not only good for loosening nasal congestion and turning up body heat but it also has numerous health benefits. Let’s take a look at the different types of health benefits of spice and spicy foods.
Number one, spicy food helps in fighting a cold. Among spicy foods, chilli pepper is the best to pick to fight common cold problems. Chilli peppers are full of vitamins like A and C and contain Capsaicin. Capsaicin is an active component of chilli peppers and activates the mucous membrane of the nose and it opens nasal passages and reduces sinusitis.
Number two; spicy food fights against cancer. Studies have shown that “capsaicin and chillies
s and other plants of that group slow down the growth of cancer cells” by inducing apoptosis or programmed cell death. Capsaicin slows the growth of deadly tumours and kills off leukemic cells. People suffering from leukaemia produce uncontrolled amounts of white blood cells in the blood and this overproduction of white blood cells disrupts the normal function of the blood. Chilli peppers along with turmeric and mustards work as a powerful anti-cancer drug in the body. An epidemiological study has shown that humans of Indian and Mexican descent have lower rates of some cancers. The phenomenon has been associated with their taking in foods rich in capsaicin.
Number three; spicy foods are good for cardiovascular diseases. As previously stated, chilli peppers contain the chemical compound capsaicin. Capsaicin fights against inflammation. It also reduces the bad cholesterol LDL in the blood. Capsaicin improves the body’s ability to dissolve blood clots by working against the inflammation. Capsaicin also reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks. Dr Ziming Zhu states that spicy flavours reduce the urge to take salt which in turn contributes to the lowering of blood pressure. A study has claimed that the intake of chilli peppers along with ginger and turmeric widens the arteries.
Number four; spicy foods improve the digestive process. Spice increases the hydrochloric secretion of the stomach. It also improves the mucous lining as well as killing off H-pylori and other bad bacteria in the gut.
Number five; spicy food can lift your mood. By increasing the secretion of feel-good hormones like endorphins and serotonin and staving off stress and depression spicy food benefits our mental health. So, the next time you are in a low mood try having something spicy and check in with how your body responds.
Number six; studies have shown that capsaicin has a thermogenic effect on the body which results in the body being able to more easily burn extra calories resulting in weight loss. Capsaicin also induces the feeling of satiety which in turn contributes to consuming fewer calories.
Number seven; spicy food can assist in relieving the pain of the body. Capsaicin can inhibit the signals that are sent from the nerve cells to the brain. It targets the brain chemical called Substance P. This chemical plays a significant role in injuries and deadens the sensation of pain felt in the body. Capsaicin is also used in certain pain-relieving creams to reduce the burning sensation of painful sores.
Number eight; some spices can provide relief from arthritis pain. Turmeric, garlic and cinnamon are all effective in reducing the joint inflammation in those suffering from arthritic conditions. The chemical compound found in turmeric is called curcumin. Curcumin is responsible for the alleviation of pain associated with arthritis. Cinnamon and garlic have also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
Number nine; a 2010 study published in Future Oncology Journal stated that capsaicin can work against the growth of prostate cancer. The prostate gland helps in the production and transportation of the male’s seminal fluid and sperm. Patients with prostate cancer can have erectile dysfunction and may have difficulty in urinating. The good news is that like other anti-inflammatory foods and drugs, capsaicin can help in suppressing prostate cancer.
There are so many health benefits to eating spice and spicy food. So, the next time you are suffering from a cold or are in pain or just want a little mood boost to consider eating some spice instead of reaching for a tablet. You may be surprised at how your body responds!

Myth over Cholesterol

CHOLESTEROL compiled by Nelson Brunton
What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol, from the Ancient Greek chole- and stereos followed by the chemical suffix -ol for an alcohol, is an organic molecule.A waxy fat like substance.
Where does it come from? Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Between 75-80% cholesterol is produced by the Liver and the remaining comes from the food you eat.
What are the different types? HDL, LDL, TG. These are the types that are generally addressed by the Medics. But you must realise that there is another type of cholesterol that the average person does not know, neither is it addressed. It is known as VLDL of Very Low Density Lipids.
Why does the body produce Cholesterol?
What does Cholesterol do? Cholesterol has major functions in the body. Its a component of cell membranes which is composed of Proteins, Cholesterol and Phospholipids. First major function of cholesterol is It Enables cells not to meet a cell and help maintain integrity and fluidity and cause free movement. The second major function is to help produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced when we consume fats and attacks upon the ultraviolet light of the sun to produce the hormone D3 Cholecalciferol The next function of cholesterol is that it helps the liver to make bile  Since bile increases the absorption of fats, it is an important part of the absorption of the fat-soluble substances, such as the vitamins A, D, E, and K. Besides its digestive function, bile serves also as the route of excretion for bilirubin, a byproduct of red blood cells recycled by the liver.
After the brain, the organs hungriest for cholesterol are our endocrine glands: adrenals and sex glands. They produce steroid hormones. Steroid hormones in the body are made from cholesterol: testosterone, progesterone, pregnenolone, androsterone, estrone, estradiol, corticosterone, aldosterone and others.
LDL particles are sometimes referred to as "bad" lipoprotein because concentrations, dose related, correlate with atherosclerosis progression. High-density lipoproteins(HDL) collect fat molecules (phospholipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc.) from the body's cells/tissues, and take it back to the liver to be reused.. Triglycerides Tg  is an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids. Triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans and other animals, as well as vegetable fat. Triglycerides provide your body with energy, but their main function is to store energy for later use. The food you eat contains calories in the form of carbohydrates, protein and fat. When you consume more calories than your body can use, it stores those calories in the form of triglycerides.
Conventional Cholesterol test. Test your cholesterol
Your risk of heart disease can be assessed with a blood- cholesterol test. According to expert guidelines:
Total cholesterol should be 5.0 mmol/L or less.
LDL should be 3.0mmol/L or less after an overnight fast.
HDL should be 1.0mmol/L or more.
Total cholesterol/HDL ratio should be less than 4.0.
VLDL: (very low-density lipoprotein) contains very little protein. The main purpose of VLDL is to distribute the triglyceride produced by your liver. A high VLDL cholesterol level can cause the buildup of cholesterol in your arteries and increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Your Total Cholesterol reading will be calculated according to you HDL+LDL+20% of your Tg.
Taken from: Doc's Opinion Blog About Heart Disease, LDL Cholesterol, Particle Number and Particle Size Made Easy
By Axel F. Sigurdsson MD
Recently measurements of atherogenic lipoprotein particles, such as LDL-P (LDL particle number), apolipoprotein B (apoB) and lipoprotein(a) have been found to be very useful to assess risk.
LDL-P measures the actual number of LDL particles (particle concentration). LDL-P may be a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than LDL-C. Low LDL-P is a much stronger predictor of low risk than low LDL-C. In fact, about 30 – 40% of those with low LDL-C may have elevated LDL-P. Therefore you can have low LDL-C but still be at risk for heart disease, particularly if your LDL-P is elevated. Discordance is considered present if LDL-C differs from LDL-P.
LDL-C is a measure of the cholesterol mass within LDL-particles. LDL-C only indirectly reflects the atherogenic potential of LDL particles. ApoB and LDL-P on the other hand reflect the number of atherogenic particles, with no mention of cholesterol mass. ApoB and LDL-P are believed to be better risk predictors than LDL-C.
Many recent studies have looked into the importance of LDL-particle size. Studies show that people whose LDL particles are predominantly small and dense, have a threefold greater risk of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, the large and fluffy type of LDL may be protective.
Sometimes it is difficult to understand the difference between LDL-C and LDL-P and how particle size comes into the picture. It is quite likely that LDL particle number and size will be used more often in the future to assess risk.
How did the Myth on Cholesterol come about? Taken from, THE TRUTH ABOUT ANCEL KEYS: WE’VE ALL GOT IT WRONG by Denise Minger. Once upon a time, a scientist named Ancel Keys did an awful thing. He published a study about different countries that made it look like heart disease was associated with fat intake. But the truth was that he started out with 22 countries and just tossed out the ones that didn’t fit his hypothesis! When other researchers analyzed his data using all the original countries, the link between fat and heart disease totally vanished. Keys was a fraud, and he’s the reason my mom made me eat skim milk and Corn Chex for breakfast instead of delicious bacon and eggs.
The study began with a great many more countries … but Keys deleted the countries whose results did not match his pre-conceived conclusions, leaving him with only Japan, Italy, Great Britain, Australia, Canada and the US. Full disclosure would have made a great deal of difference.
Keys published this graph in 1953 in a paper called called “Atherosclerosis: A problem in newer public health” (which is apparently so brilliant that neither the abstract nor full text is allowed to exist online). It was simple, really: he graphed fat consumption alongside heart disease mortality in men from six different countries—and voila! The data points landed in a tidy little line. Keys first unveiled his Wonder Curve to a handful of people at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, but his most famous presentation was at that WHO conference a few years later.
It is well known that the indirect method merely suggests that there is an association between the characteristics studied and mortality rates and, further, that no matter how plausible such an association may appear, it is not in itself proof of a cause-effect relationship. But quotation and repetition of the suggestive association soon creates the impression that the relationship is truly valid, and ultimately it acquires status as a supporting link in a chain of presumed proof.
What is the truth? The evidence—both from experiments and from field surveys—indicates that the cholesterol content, per se, of all natural diets has no significant effect on either the serum cholesterol level or the development of atherosclerosis in man.

You decide.

Ancient Herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Fight Malaria and TB, Says New Study

Ancient Herbal Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Fight Malaria and TB, Says New Study

A centuries-old herbal Chinese medicine, used to effectively treat malaria, may help fight tuberculosis and slow the evolution of drug resistance, scientists have found. In a study led by Robert Abramovitch, from the Michigan State University in the US, the ancient remedy artemisinin stopped the ability of TB-causing bacteria, known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, to become dormant.
This stage of the disease often makes the use of antibiotics ineffective. “When TB bacteria are dormant, they become highly tolerant to antibiotics,” Abramovitch said. “Blocking dormancy makes the TB bacteria more sensitive to these drugs and could shorten treatment times,” he said.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis, or Mtb, needs oxygen to thrive in the body. The immune system starves this bacterium of oxygen to control the infection. Abramovitch and his team found that artemisinin attacks a molecule called heme, which is found in the Mtb oxygen sensor.
By disrupting this sensor and essentially turning it off, the artemisinin stopped the disease’s ability to sense how much oxygen it was getting. “When the Mtb is starved of oxygen, it goes into a dormant state, which protects it from the stress of low-oxygen environments,” Abramovitch said. “If Mtb can’t sense low oxygen, then it can’t become dormant and will die,” he said.
Abramovitch indicated that dormant TB can remain inactive for decades in the body. However, if the immune system weakens at some point, it can wake back up and spread. Whether it wakes up or stays ‘asleep’ though, he said TB can take up to six months to treat and is one of the main reasons the disease is so difficult to control. “Patients often don’t stick to the treatment regimen because of the length of time it takes to cure the disease,” he said.
Incomplete therapy plays an important role in the evolution and spread of multi-drug resistant TB strains,” he said. The research could be key to shortening the course of therapy because it can clear out the dormant, hard-to-kill bacteria. This may lead to improving patient outcomes and slowing the evolution of drug-resistant TB.
After screening 540,000 different compounds, Abramovitch also found five other possible chemical inhibitors that target the Mtb oxygen sensor in various ways and could be effective in treatment as well. “TB is a global problem that requires new tools to slow its spread and overcome drug resistance. This new method of targeting dormant bacteria is exciting because it shows us a new way to kill it,” said Abramovitch.
The study was published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.

The 3 Gifts

The 3 Gift. By Nelson Brunton
Reading through the Holy Scriptures, we are told that when Jesus was born the 3 Wiseman from the east followed the Star which leads them to the Stable. They brought with them Gifts which were Gold, frankincense & Myrrh. Analyzing these three Gifts 2 stand out as essential oils, very healing in their use, but the third, Gold seems out of context. What would Jesus want with gold? According to me, I feel the third being Gold is the all healing herb Turmeric. This makes more sense as with the the other two are also for healing.
Myrrh: Common myrrh oil uses historically, include:
Fragrance, Embalming, Flavoring for food, Treating hay fever, As an antiseptic to clean and heal wounds,As a paste to help stop bleeding.
Frankincense: Helps Decrease Inflammation and Pain  ,Acts as a Sleep Aid ,Eases Digestion, Heals Skin and Prevents Signs of Aging , Astringent, Kills Harmful Germs and Bacteria , May Help Fight Cancer, or Deal with Chemotherapy Side Effects , Helps Boost Immune System Function and Prevents Illness , Helps Reduce Stress Reactions & Negative Emotions.
Turmeric: Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties, Curcumin is a Natural Anti-Inflammatory Compound, Turmeric Dramatically Increases The Antioxidant Capacity of The Body,  Curcumin Boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Linked to Improved Brain Function and a Lower Risk of Brain Diseases, Curcumin Leads to Various Improvements That Should Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease, Turmeric Can Help Prevent (And Perhaps Even Treat) Cancer, Curcumin May be Useful in Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease, Arthritis Patients Respond Very Well to Curcumin Supplementation, Studies Show That Curcumin Has Incredible Benefits Against Depression,  Curcumin May Help Delay Aging, and Fight Age-Related Chronic Diseases.
